3 Things
Many of you may have seen the article on
the internet about the mom who starts out in the morning to accomplish a
small task, there are so many interruptions, distractions and side trips
that at the end of the day, she has done many things, but not the thing she
started out to do.
We all have days like those. One thing that I have found to effectively keep
me on track is to choose 3 major tasks that are “must do’s” for the day.
You can choose your number accordingly to suit yourself. When my kids where
very young, one thing used to be a grand accomplishment.
Mary Kay Ash, the famous founder of Mary Kay Cosmetics used to do 6 and
gives much credit for her success to this daily habit.
Start with these tasks at the first opportunity and do them before you do
anything else.
This is very effective, because not only does it force you to focus and keep
on track until you hit your target – it also means that you can prepare
ahead and allows you to wipe out the distractions ahead of time, especially
if you create your list for the next day, the day before.
I find that writing my 3 things on index cards, in coloured markers really
helps to keep me focused. I can put it right on my desk but it does not get
in the way.
Something about pulling out a new card and filling in the empty space with
three significant targets, that I “know” I will hit today is motivating in
itself.
The secure feeling of that small bit of certainty also boosts energy and
confidence, giving even greater benefit.
Another method is to use a notebook that has a home of it’s own.
This allows you to keep records of what and when you have accomplished a
task. This can be of value if you need to look something up or check a date.
It is also very motivating as the accomplishments add up before your very
eyes.
Especially on those days that you don’t feel you are getting anywhere.
THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS
Get an index card notebook.
They look just like index cards but are spiral bound like a notebook. Easy
to make room for, carry if need be and will create a database of all of your
major daily targets over time.
Next time you're feeling scattered, think “3 things” and get out your index
cards.
